While forced marriage has been\u00a0<\/em>illegal<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/em>UK since 2014<\/em>\u00a0and \u2018<\/em>love marriages<\/em>\u2019<\/em>\u00a0are held up as the norm, arranged marriages\u00a0<\/em>often\u00a0<\/em>fall into a grey area between the two.<\/em><\/p>

In the first generation\u00a0of arranged marriages in Britain,\u00a0people would\u00a0return to\u00a0their homeland to find partners,\u00a0and would expect their children to\u00a0follow in their footsteps. There\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0marked shift in the attitude of the British-born second generation\u00a0in the 60s\/70s and unlike their parents,\u00a0this generation\u00a0identified more with Britain than with\u00a0Asian countries.\u00a0Today younger\u00a0British\u00a0Asians\u00a0prefer two styles of marriage \u2013 a semi-arranged and\u00a0love-arranged marriage.\u00a0Regardless,\u00a0it is\u00a0still vital to\u00a0acknowledge the diversity of arranged marriage forms and what it means to the family unit.\u00a0Love\u00a0and arrangement can exist\u00a0together, as shown by the marriage styles that are popular among British\u00a0Asians\u00a0today.<\/p>

The modern arranged marriage is more than\u00a0simply\u00a0meeting your soon-to-be spouse on your wedding day\u00a0for the very first time.\u00a0Today, there is often\u00a0significant\u00a0negotiation between matched couples\u00a0and their families.\u00a0<\/p>

However, an arranged marriage is not a guarantee of\u00a0<\/strong>a\u00a0<\/strong>happy or\u00a0<\/strong>successful marriage.<\/strong><\/p>

The divorce process is a stressful time for\u00a0all\u00a0individuals\u00a0regardless of culture\u00a0and tradition.\u00a0No matter whether your divorce journey is\u00a0contentious or amicable,\u00a0you will be expected to\u00a0go through your debts, assets, and personal belongings with a fine-toothed comb\u00a0just as you would with a western divorce process.\u00a0The one thing that could be hard to navigate\u00a0in an arranged marriage is the provision of\u00a0a dowry.<\/p>

In\u00a0Britain today,\u00a0the rising\u00a0standard of living coupled with\u00a0Asians\u2019\u00a0desire to advance in their community, the dowry has remained intact.<\/p>
